AUSTRALIAN YOUTH ORCHESTRA 2010

The Australian Youth Orchestra is happy to extend the application deadline for harp applications to Friday 18 September. There are no live auditions for harp, they are all recorded.

AYO NATIONAL MUSIC CAMP
3 – 17 January
Combine over 200 of Australia’s best and brightest young musicians, internationally-acclaimed conductors, and some of the finest musicians from both Australia and abroad as tutors, in an intensive, live-in environment and you’ve got AYO National Music Camp. In 2010 the conductors are Lawrence Renes, Lutz Koehler and Howard Penny. The orchestral program helps participants achieve the highest level of orchestral playing through intensive rehearsals and performances with internationally recognised conductors, sectional tutorials under the guidance of some of Australia’s most respected and skilled musicians, in addition to a range of chamber music and ensemble activities.  The harp tutor for 2010 is Genevieve Lang.
 
THE CONDUCTORS
Lawrence Renes rose to prominence in 1995, when he replaced Riccardo Chailly to conduct the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam. In recent seasons, Lawrence Renes has conducted many of Europe’s most prestigious orchestras, including the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, BBC and Gothenburg Symphonies.

Lutz Koehler was the Director of the European Union Youth Orchestra for 25 years, and is now the Honorary Music Adviser.  He has been Director of the Orchestras at the Royal Academy of Music, London,  and is an Honorary Member. He has worked with a great number of German, European orchestras including Deutsches Sinfonie Orchester Berlin, and is frequently invited to major festivals all over the world.

Canberra-born cellist Howard Penny is presently a member of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe (working with the world's leading conductors and soloists), lecturer in performance practice at the University Mozarteum Salzburg, and resident faculty at ANAM. He is a frequent guest principal cello with Camerata Salzburg, the Australian Chamber Orchestra, and Radio Sinfonie Orchester Vienna.
 
AYO FEBRUARY 2010 – BRITTEN Peter Grimes

West Australian Opera and Perth International Arts Festival in association with the Australian Youth Orchestra present PETER GRIMES by Benjamin Britten
 
Participants will experience playing in the pit of a fully staged professional opera production. One of the greatest operas of the 20th century, Benjamin Britten’s Peter Grimes will be given its Perth premiere in a new co-production of Opera Australia, Houston Grand Opera, West Australian Opera and Perth International Arts Festival. Created by acclaimed Australian director Neil Armfield and conducted by Richard Mills, Peter Grimes stars Grammy Award-winning American tenor Antony Dean Griffey, who has received critical and popular acclaim for his performances in leading roles at major opera houses around the world.

THE CONDUCTOR
Richard Mills conducts all of Australia's leading professional orchestras and is one of the country’s most frequently commissioned and performed composers.  He is currently Artistic Director of West Australian Opera.
 
AYO JULY 2010 – INTERNATIONAL TOUR
4 July – 4 August
In 2010 AYO is hitting the road on an exciting three-continent tour across Australia, China and Europe, with celebrated international conductor Sir Mark Elder.  This tour marks AYO’s 20th international tour and is set to be our most ambitious yet. The AYO will play in some of the most world’s most prestigious concert halls, including engagements at The Proms, Concertgebouw, Shanghai Oriental Arts Centre & Beijing National Centre for the Performing Arts.

THE CONDUCTOR
Sir Mark Elder is Music Director of the Hallé since September 2000.  He regularly appears with many of the world’s leading symphony orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Orchestre de Paris, the Chicago Symphony, the Boston Symphony, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Munich Philharmonic.
