A fun time was had by
all who attended the Latin harp workshop with Sandra Real and Cliona
Molins. Some of us had been to the Latin concert the night
before, so were really inspired to learn something different and
challenging. Playing two hands together, each with a different
rhythm was no mean feat. As it is almost impossible to write
down, we recorded each song so we could take them home to
practice. The first song was "Pajaro Chogui" from Paraguay
(pajaro is Spanish for "bird") and the second was the well-known "La
Paloma" (the dove) from Cuba. "La Paloma" was composed by
Sebastian Yradier after he visited Cuba in 1861. It was based on
the "Habenera" a musical style which is one of the oldest mainstays of
Cuban music and the first to be exported all over the world.
Everyone enjoyed Sandra's relaxed and patient manner and I'm sure would
love to learn some more of this lovely music. A big thank you to
Sandra and Cliona for organising this great weekend.
