Christmas Holiday December 2001

Sunday 23 December

Our third holiday with Dorset Queen Coaches this year to spend five days in the Oxford area and the Cotswolds based at the Oxford Hotel in Wolvercote.

Our journey through Dorset and Wiltshire enabled our party to swell to 39 people and to visit several attractive market towns with a coffee/lunch stop at the Wilton shopping village.

Then a short stay in Oxford city before arriving to a warm welcome at the hotel.

Here on the mezzanine floor of the hotel we were received with tea and mince pies in the Medio bar

In the evening after a dinner in the main restaurant we were entertained to fun and games by the entertainment staff.

Monday 24 December

The Medio restaurant was a fresh setting for our breakfast, with ample room for the guests from the three coach parties who were sharing the holiday

Back to the hotel for an excursion to the Cotswold villages

The afternoon option was another visit to Oxford but we chose to make a pilgrimage to Kidlington to remember Polly's brother Ray.

Tuesday 25 December

For the first time in many years we attended the Christmas eve service at St Peters church Wolvercote where the church was exclusively illuminated by candles, a formidable display and a testimonial to the energy of the congregation.

In preparation for the midday feast we took another walk along the canal bank in light rain

Our traditional Christmas lunch was enjoyed in the company of John and Heather

and another John and Stella

Good games of Trivial Pursuits and scrabble combined with Santa's visit, the Queens speech and more entertainment in the dining room filled the day.
Wednesday 26 December
On a clear and crisp day we visited the grounds of Blenheim Palace

A walk to the Monument to Queen Anne with splendid views of the lake .

The palace was not open to visitors but the massive gates were open.
Thursday 27 December
We board the coach for our return journey to Dorset in the care of our excellent driver Ian.
