Gowland Farm Holiday July 2001

Sunday 15 July, our first day in North Yorkshire and we follow the old railway track from Ravenscar to Robin Hood's Bay ( 5 miles) one of the few tracks permitted during the Foot and Mouth epidemic still prevalent in the area.

The recently restored old coastguard station at the dock in Robin's Hood bay as seen from the entrance to the Bay View hotel where Brian and Tommy had just had a cooling ale before returning to Ravenscar via the beach and the cliff path ( 3 miles). Mary and Polly had collected the Capri at Robin's Hood bay station and returned to Gowland farm.

Monday 16 July another railway walk from Goathland to Grosmont, now joined by Gareth's family. Here we are picnicking in a wooded path of the track.

Further along we were diverted up a particularly nasty climb but we did get a good view of the train.

Back at Over Across resting after our labours.

Tuesday 17 July, we visit 67 Thames Avenue in Guisborough, our first house in 1958.

Polly with our dear neighbours, Phyllis and Clifford Petch at Grange farm Little Ayton.

We all meet for a picnic in the Forest Park.

Ben and Emily collecting material for the daily video.

Mary and Polly in deep thought over the Guardian crossword.

Wednesday 18 July, Whitby Abbey, now under the care of English Heritage and getting the tender loving care it deserves.

No these are not the ghosts of Whitby but a spectacular display of wedding dresses in the cliff top church.

The church and its cemetery with Whitby in the background.

Street musicians from St Petersburg Academy of music, and splendid performers they were too.

A short pause for late afternoon refreshment and a comfortable view of the harbour.

The main event of the day the traditional tea at the Magpie Cafe.

The crabs have gone but the crocodiles provided just as much entertainment. Gareth as usual the top scorer in our party.

The late evening view of the Magpie after a stroll on the breakwater.

Thursday 19 July, another repast to remember, this time at the Victoria Hotel on the cliff top at Robin's Hood Bay

A spectacular view of Ravenscar as we emerged from our meal.

Friday 20 July, a typical English beach scene this time at Sandsend

Brian and Ben fly a kite.

Emily goes fossil hunting and paddling.

Lunch at Sandsend.

We descend to the dock at Robin's Hood bay.

The Bay Hotel where we take tea !!!
